WATCH| Truck Plunges Into Mupfure River, Driver Feared Dead
A 30-tonne truck veered off the road and plunged into the Mupfure River in Beatrice on Friday. The truck was travelling from Chivhu en route to Harare.
According to eyewitnesses, the 30-tonne truck had a super link trailer. The truck hit a JCB which also veered off the road into the river. One passenger from the JCB vehicle survived the accident while the other did not.
It is not clear if the driver of the 30-tonne truck had passengers. According to an eyewitness account, the truck driver had not made it out when the eyewitness arrived at the scene of the accident.
The eyewitness said:
Ndiri pa Beatrice izvozvo pane Mupfure apa. Ndasvika accident ichangoitika. Hapasikutozivikanwa kuti imota rudzii yawira murukova I30 tonne. Hapana kana munhu arikutoziva kuti imota type ipi asi i30 tonne truxk ine superlink. Iri murukova mumvura zvekuti haisikutooneka kana iyo horse yacho. Trailer urikungoonawo tuma piece tudiki diki kuti uwone kuti pane zvimasimbi izvo. Asi haisi kutooneka kuti itori mota rudzii. Driver aringori imomo hameno kana anga ane vanhuwo vari vese imomo. Hapana kana abuda murori imomo.
According to the eyewitness account, the JCB vehicle fell into the river from the right side on the way from Masvingo while the truck fell to the left. Both of the vehicles fell into the river through the space in the bridge.
The two vehicles fell into the bridge while trying to prevent a collision with a bus. The bus did not while its passengers suffered minor injuries. The eyewitness said:
Zvese zvapoya nepakati pebridge. Zvanga zvichinosangana nebhazi. Bhazi rangokweshwawo. But mubhazi hapana vanhu vafa vangokuvara zvimwe zviya zviya
The eyewitness said fishermen attempted to rescue the truck and JCB vehicle drivers without success. The eyewitness said:
Vakomana vefish vanga varipowo vane ka boat kavo vambozama kuti pamwe vangakwanise kuvhurira door kuti vabuditse driver. Vatsvaga pane musoro werori vashaya. Kusvika namanje rori ringori mumvura hapana chati chabuda
