Supersport United Coach Gavin Hunt Appoints A Zimbabwean As Captain
Supersport United coach Gavin Hunt has appointed Zimbabwean international Ornismor Bhasera as the club’s new captain.
The solid 36-year-old Bhasera assumed the captaincy role, taking over from the goalkeeper Ronwen Williams who opted to join Mamelodi Sundowns this transfer window.
The goal-minder Williams captained Supersport for just two years and was handed the armband following the departure of Dean Furman in 2020.
The Zimbabwean defender Bhasera joined the South Africa-based team in 2016 and yesterday he was given the task to lead the squad in the 2022/23 season.
Speaking of the appointment of Bhasera as the club’s new captain, Gavin Hunt said:
“Bash (Bhasera) will be the captain this season,” said Hunt who further highlighted that the Warriors defender “Is an experienced and a great professional player.”
“He’s a leader and I think he’ll do well in that role. He had a great season last year and we need someone to speak up and keep the standards as high as possible not only on the pitch but off the pitch and I’m sure Bash will do a great job.He has full support, I elected him, it was an undemocratic decision.”
Bhasera who last year extended his contract with Supersport United said:
“It (being captain) is a big responsibility. SuperSport is a big club, but I’ve got to take it with both hands and I will obviously have to go out there and lead by example. I need to bring my A-game, so it’s going to be an interesting season.
“Ronwen served the club well and it’s a big loss, but it’s a big opportunity for someone else who is going to come in and fill those shoes. He (Williams) is gone, but that’s football. Players are always moving around. We wish him luck at his new club.”
