Zimbabwean Jailed For Producing Fake South African Drivers’ Licenses

A Zimbabwean national Zephania Zimunya has been sentenced after being convicted for producing fake drivers’ licenses.

Zimunya was arrested a year ago.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) reported that Zephania Zimunya who operated from an internet café was sentenced to one-year imprisonment after being kept in custody for 11 months.

The RTMC said:

On an investigation conducted by NTACU and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), a Zimbabwean foreign national, Zephania Zimunya, was convicted for producing fraudulent South African driving licenses and foreign driving licenses from an internet café he was operating in his backyard in Hercules, Pretoria.

This follows his arrest on 26 August 2021 when members of NTACU and DPCI conducted a joint undercover operation at the identified internet café with the intention of purchasing the alleged fraudulent documentation and to arrest the suspect.

During the operation, two undercover agents posed as clients needing fraudulent driving licenses which they successfully purchased leading to the immediate arrest of the 48-year-old Zimbabwean male.

He appeared in court and was sentenced to a year of imprisonment after being kept in custody for 11 months

The RTMC also explained that the court further directed that Zephania Zimunya be deported on completion of his sentence as he was also an illegal immigrant.

Meanwhile, another Zimbabwean man was arrested at the Beitbridge Border Post on Saturday for attempting to smuggle commercial explosives into South Africa.

The suspect, aged 33, was arrested at about 01:30 as he crossed into South Africa from Zimbabwe.

A statement released by the police says that the suspect was arrested after the truck he was driving, was routinely stopped and searched. Upon searching the truck, police discovered commercial explosives concealed inside four big bags.

The Musina Explosive Unit was immediately called to the scene at Beitbridge Border Post. Three reels of detonating cords and at least 769 units of blasting cartridges were confiscated.
