Mbongeni Ngema Death: Police Investigate Driver Following Crash

In a surprising turn of events, the driver of the car involved in the tragic accident resulting in the death of the multi-talented Mbongeni Ngema is now under police investigation.

The 68-year-old, who was also a musician, composer and choreographer, lost his life in a head-on collision on Wednesday evening.

Family Confirms Ngema’s Passing

The unfortunate incident occurred as he was returning from a funeral in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, as confirmed in a family statement.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother, father, husband and patriot, Mbongeni Ngema. He was a passenger in the vehicle,” part of the statement released by the family reads.

Tributes to Ngema from industry colleagues, friends and politicians flooded social media.

Focus Shifts to Legal Implications

However, the focus has now shifted to the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident, with a recent police statement revealing potential legal consequences. Police disclosed that they are investigating a case of culpable homicide arising from the collision that took place around 4:30 pm on Wednesday in the Mbizana area.

Mbongeni Ngema Death: Driver Being Investigated

In the statement, Lt-Col Siphokazi Mawisa mentioned that two individuals, including the driver, are still hospitalized. While the current condition of those involved was not disclosed, it was noted that they were in serious condition upon initial response at the accident scene.

Detailing the circumstances, Lt-Col Siphokazi Mawisa explained,

“Police responded to an accident scene on the R61 road between Mbizana and Magusheni and, on arrival, they found three people including the driver in a serious condition. It is alleged a white Renault sedan was driving from Lusikisiki to Durban when they were involved in an accident involving a truck. The three people were rushed to hospital for treatment. The deceased [Ngema], who was one of the passengers, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital and the other two including the driver are still at hospital.

She added that the exact cause of the crash remains unclear, prompting ongoing police investigations to shed light on the sequence of events leading to the tragic accident.
